The German artist Lambert Maria Wintersberger was born in Munich in 1941. He began his professional career in 1958 painting decorations and glass, including in churches, and as a mosaicist. In 1961, Wintersberger started studying at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence and concentrated on his training as a lithographer and nude drawer. He finished his studies there in 1964 and worked in Berlin as a professional artist until 1968, when he was awarded the Burda Prize in Munich. With other artists such as Markus Lüpertz, Karl Horst Hödicke, and Bernd Koberling, he helped found the Gallery "Großgörschen 35" in Berlin. After working together for 4 years, the group split up in 1968.
Wintersberger, going his own way, produced the "Verletztungsbilder" ("Pictures of Wounds/Injuries"). He moved to Sttutgart in 1969 then received the prize for painting at the 6th Youth Biennial in Paris the next year and moved to Cologne.
The artist took part in the 11th Biennial in Sao Paulo. During the years 1971 and 1972, Wintersberger worked in the United States and then moved to Nörvenich.
From 1974 until 1977, he took on a teaching position at the art academy in Düsseldorf. Again he changed his residence and stayed in Stuttgart from 1980 until 1985, finally moving to Walbourg, France, where he lives and works until today.
Lambert Maria Wintersberger was the laureate of the Centre Européen d'Actions Artistique Contemporaines in Strasbourg in 1992, and in 2005 and 2006, he was the guest artist at the Majolika Ceramic Factory in Karlsruhe.
